TITINA RODRIGUES - Cantora Cabo-verdiana

Titina Rodrigues, um dos destacados nomes da morna e coladeira, vai gravar quinze músicas de Jorge Monteiro, "Jotamont", num novo trabalho que se prevê esteja pronto em Outubro.

O responsável pela produção deste novo CD, Rui Machado, considera Titina uma das melhores vozes de Cabo Verde, a par de Cesária Évora. A sua carreira teve grandes interrupções numa fase em que foi necessário dedicar-se mais à família.

Um contrato, alegadamente, fraudulento com um produtor, terá impedido a cantora de gravar durante uma década. Para o novo CD, cujo custo se estima em mais de 20 mil euros, Rui Machado está a procurar um "mecenas". Sem este apoio, afirma, «será muito dificil executar este trabalho no tempo previsto».

A cantora, natural de S. Vicente, em 1946, começou a cantar aos 12 anos, tendo efecutado concertos em vários países. Foi agradiada pelo presidente da República Portuguesa e também pelo Presidente de Cabo Verde e vive há muitos anos em Portugal, onde já actuou nos locais mais conceituados.

Titina é conhecida pela sua "voz cristalina" e é tida como uma "purista da morna". Tem gravações suas em diversos trabalhos colectivos, como "Músicas de Intervenção" e "Lisboa nos Cantares cabo-verdianos". Possui um CD a solo "Titina Canta B.Leza". A concretizar-se o próximo seu próximo trabalho será, por isso, a segunda vez que se dedica por inteiro a um núnico compositor, neste caso a Jotamont.

B.Leza, pseudónimo de Francisco Xavier da Cruz, é um dos compositores cabo-verdianos que mais se dedicou aos ritmos tradicionais do seu país, especialmente a morna. Neste disco, a Titina homenageia o compositor interpretando algumas das suas composições. Com uma voz simultâneamente cristalina e profunda, sempre plena de sensibilidade, canta um repertório de melodias que vão desde a melancolia e a saudade pela terra, aos ritmos brasileiros, mais alegres, que tanto influênciaram a música cabo-verdiana.

Titina - Cruel Destino

Comparisons with Cape Verde’s Queen of morna, Cesaria Evora, are inevitable and hard to avoid. But if there’s one thing better than having one evocative interpreter of the islands’ soulful folk music, and that’s being blessed with two of them.

The similarities between Abertina "Titina" Rodrigues Almeida and her illustrious compatriot are plentiful — well past the first flush of youth, she possesses a smooth, yearning, laid-back vocal style that sings mournful songs of love and longing for the Cape Verde islands over guitar, piano and bass backing. Just the occasional mid-tempo number is dropped in to remind the listener of the islands’ links with the bossa-nova and samba of Brazil.

Titina, too, looks like receiving worldwide favour at a relatively late stage of her career, having ditched recording for live performances over the last decade, before eventually being persuaded to record this lushly arranged (by guitarist Bau) set of Cape Verdean standards.

The differences? Well, much more use of clarinet, played with understated mellifluousness by Daniel Salomé, particularly on the jaunty, mid-tempo ‘Saia Travada’ where he weaves his notes over a stop-start piano rhythm as Titina croons about her desire to return to her country of origin. There’s real feeling in that song, not least because Titina is now based in Lisbon, and the Portugese influence is apparent on tracks such as ‘Desgosto Profundo’, with its light dusting of fado guitar work by Osvaldo Dias.

If I’m allowed one more comparison with Cesaria it’s that if you like that great lady’s smoother recordings, where the light, lilting rhythms and subtle acoustic guitar or piano fills are ridden by her voice of limited range but bottomless feeling — and the sound of that being mixed with snaking, soulful clarinet and violin appeals to you — then Cruel Destino is an album that comes highly recommended.
